Xfree86 & 8.1 Issue (?)

Last night I installed 8.1 on a piece-of-junk Packard-Bell 200Mhz box, replacing a functional 8.0 install. On the prior install, without any voodoo at all, XFree86 configured the onboard (S3, I think) video, and an ancient Packard-Bell 15" monitor @ 1024x768, no problem whatsoever ... I did have to identify the monitor, but didn't get asked at all about the video adapter. Just to put it in perspective, this same box loaded Red Hat 7.1 & 7.2 no problems, but I had the same issue with RH 7.3 ... just no go. I tried installing SaX (in addition to SaX2), even tried uninstalling the newer XFree86 & SaX2 in order to try using the older Xfree & SaX, no go, YaST2 insisted on installing SaX2 when I tried to invoke SaX ... running SaX without YaST2 just failed to execute (forget the errors) ... I have the box up @ 800x600, but I'd really like to see 1024x768 ... any tips or pointers to HOWTO's?

tia, steve
