I was running SUSE 7.1 as a file and printer server. One of my drives was a Maxtor 60g UDMA unit. It was connected by a SIIG UDMA card.
It worked fine for several months until I decided to upgrade to 8.0. 100% of the time, the computer locked during the boot process as, according to the onscreen messages, partitions were being checked.
I'm not familiar with these HW specific problems but the hdparm setting "using_dma" is by default on in 8.0 but not (IMHO) in 7.1. Try the failsafe boot option in 8.0 to see if it helps. -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se
