Ok Anders I downloaded Forte onto the root Desktop. I then ran chmod to make executable, and the run the downloaded binary from the root desktop. It then asked me for the directory in which to install so I entered: /root/ The installation completed ok. I then ran forte from the KDE run command /forte directory/the.sh file and it worked great. But when I log in as any other user (accept for root) I cant obtain an icon or any way of running forte. I am new to Linux so I am not sure if I have installed forte correctly possibly in the wrong directory, or maybe it has to be installed for each user, although I hope not I have 130 students that will be learning java. Any help would be fantastic JOhn Proctor.

Hi I tried to install NetBeans but again I could only install as a single user. So I downloaded Forte and installed it as /root but its only available as root, is there any way I can install so that the students can use the Forte IDE without installing for each user any help would be greatly appreciated kindest regards John Proctor Tresham Institute.
I'm not sure what you've tried. I just installed NetBeans (both versions) as well as Forte. I ran the installations as root and I have no problems whatever with running the programs as a local user.
Tell us exactly what you've tried and any error messages you may have received along the way, and odds are someone on the list will be able to say what you're doing wrong

PS. I had no idea InstallShield was ported to linux. That's actually cool :)
