Hi all, I just tried upgrading alsa 0.5 to alsa 0.9 (SuSE 7.2). I download the alsa-0.9 package (binary) from SuSE's ftp (/people/tiwai/7.2), and installed it. Since I've upgrade the kernel to 2.4.16, I've also recompiled the driver (successfully). However, after installation, I got several problems: 1. After that, following the README file, I stop alsa (rcalsasound stop), then remove /etc/asound.conf, then run alsaconf. It detect my card correctly as snd_ali5451. However, when alsaconf tried to do testing (the last part), I got this error: ========================================================================== ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:598:(snd_pcm_hw_open) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_PVERSION failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device aplay: main:445: audio open error: Inappropriate ioctl for device ========================================================================== After that, alsaconf exit with some other verbose messages. 2. In KDE 3.0.3, (Control Center/Sound/Sound Server), I forced artsd to use "ALSA" as the "Sound I/O Method" instead of "Autodetect". However, artsd fail to use ALSA with the following messages (in dialog box): ============================================================= Sound server informational message: Error while initializing the sound driver: device: /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device or address). The sound server will continue, using the null output device. ============================================================= I checked the /dev subdirectory, and found /dev/dsp does exist, it is symlinked to /dev/dsp0. So I tried (in console) to cat a .wav directly to the /dev/dsp. I expected to hear the .wav, but sometimes I got "garbled/noise" sound instead (for certain .wav files). Therefore, I believe that my ALSA is not configure properly yet (might be related to no. 1). Any idea/thought about this?
