This would surely only apply if you use SuSE's packages, not when you compile
yourself.

Hm. How do you know you have any callback support you didn't have before? The
passwordfd module is loaded as the first thing, and as I understand it you
don't get much further than that?
In any case, exactly how did you recompile? Did you apply SuSE's patches?
Specifically, ppp-2.3.11-pwfd.dif has the plugin with the chap_passwd_hook
support.
