For software that is only available in tar.gz form what is the best policy for installation? Should I copy all packages to /usr/local then su to root then gunzip un'tar compile and install?
It's difficult to say what's "best". In general you shouldn't work as root for any longer than you absolutely have to. I have a directory in my $HOME called "src" where I untar packages and compile them. Then I "su" to root and do "make install". In 999 cases out of 1000 this will install the package to /usr/local, although you may want to check the README files to make sure you haven't stumbled across that 1000th case :) regards Anders
