My linux-box has 2 ethernet connections, eth0 and eth1. What are the advantages of using the dual connections? Should the connections be configured with one IP address or with two IP addresses? Are there any additional configurations necessary?
Typically, 1 ethernet connection connects you to the internet (or your school's network) and the second is to connect to your own "personal network". You can setup firewall rules to protect you from the internet connection, while allowing more unrestricted access from your "personal network connection". These usually are numbered 192.168.xxx.xxx. (other numbers are also used , called Class C network) In a typical setup, 1 of your ethernet connections will connect to the internet, and the second ethernet would be for plugging in a laptop, or even a hub for your own private net. These machines on the private net can use masquerading to access the internet thru your main computer. If you can get 2 internet addresses then you can connect both your ethernet cards to the internet. There are a bunch of "Networking-Howtos" out there, do a google search. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
