cut and paste in KDE

Two questions actually:
1. Has anyone found a way to cut and paste from emacs to a KDE3 application?
2. In KWrite and Kate, the cursor disappears when I move and reappears when I release the arrow key, making cursor movement a bit hit and miss. Has anyone found a work around for this? Or is it something to do with there being a common 'text widget' behind the scenes...
