I'm not running SuSE 8.0, so there may be something I don't know about.
In 7.3, there is a rc.config option like "make java link". This tells YAST to make links to your java vm. Is this setting wrong on your current configuration?

I'm having a terrible day. :o( I cannot get my box to recognize that Java is installed. Here's what's happened.
I installed two files from the SuSE 8.0 disks:
IBM Runtime (Java2-JRE v1.3,0) IBM Developers Kit (Java-SDK)
In my usr/lib directory I see the following:
1) IBMJava2-1.3.0 2) IBMJava2 (this is a pointer, a link back to IBMJava2-1.3.0) 3) java (this is also a pointer linking back to the same file)
When I try to install Polarbar (an e-mail program) it apparently can't find the Java.
In fact, nothing sees the Java. I type "java" and nothing happens. I type "jre" and nothing happens.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Java several times without success.
What am I missing to get Java installed and running?
Thanks. Gil
