I had trouble with my Kodak DC-4800 with camera:/ in Konqueror - it basically didn't work at all. My camera was also a tad flaky with gphoto2 but useable, however, I could only download one photo at a time, and there was no command recall mode with gphoto2 --shell. The one app that works perfectly for me is gtkam. You might consider trying it out, and perhaps it will work for you also.
