Is it just xmms or is it all sound? If it's all sound, try moving alsasound to a later place in the startup. I remember someone else having this problem. Edit /etc/init.d/alsasound and add splash_late to the line starting with "Required-Start". Then do "insserv -r alsasound" and "insserv alsasound" This should set alsasound to start last of all services. If it's just xmms, try starting xmms with "artsdsp xmms" or select the arts output plugin from xmms' preferences. The kde sound daemon artsd can sometimes lock the sound device.
