IMHO it's not possible with XFree86. As you have found out: Virtual
screen resolution cannot be changed without restarting the X-server
and is set, by default, to fit all configured video modes.
But if I understand it right, this is not related to the original
problem.

IMHO it's not possible with XFree86. As you have found out: Virtual
