You need to configure an MTA (mail transfer agent). I suggest you use
YAST (Network/Basic -> Mail) to do it. Basic configuration is easy,
you don't need to read any documentation.
Your MUA (mail, mutt, ...) will send the e-mail to your MTA (the
default is sendmail in SuSE 8.0) and it will send it to your IP
provider's SMTP server.
