Welcome to the suse-wireless-broken-e list!
I tried many ways to make the new SuSE 8.0 scripts work with encryption keys, but never got it. After a lot of tinkering, I *think* the SuSE scripts can be made to work IF you are using encryption key [1] which I am not.
My solution was to modify the ifup-wireless script and hard code the iwconfig command in the right spot. See the unofficial SuSEfaq for details of where I made the change: http://susefaq.sourceforge.net
