While 20 meg theoretically is plenty to play an mp3, if you have other
services running it could prove to be inadequate. The other thing to
remember with mp3's is that the cpu requirement are considerably higher
than WAV files. If your cpu is not fast enough to decompress the mp3
play it and refill the buffer in an apropriate amount of time you could
see results such as you described. I would suggest running top and
seeing what your system looks like while playing the WAV files and the
mp3's.
