Synaptic not really doing anything

Hi All
I installed apt and synaptic on my SuSE 8.0 system. Apt are working
fine, but synaptic does not do any actual installations/removals, etc.
It will download the packages and then when it needs to install them, it
pops up a progress dialog and freezes up.
When I tried to remove stuff with it, it displayed which packages will
be removed and when I click 'proceed' the dialog disappears and Synaptic
seems to be very happy with the state of things, but the packages are
still there.
Are there any additional stuff I need to set up or install to make
synaptic work?
I installed apt, aptlib and synaptic from the apt/extra stuff on the ftp
server.
Thanks
