"Expert" Partitioner

I'm new on this list, so please excuse if this has been commented on
previously:
Just installing SuSE 8.0 -- and could not help but notice that Expert
Partitioner uses the un-linux-like method of naming cylinders; starting at
number 0, as in DOS.
Why is this? Or, should I say, is this really necessary?
