Hi,
Are you using PC2100 ECC DDR RAM on your system?
If you system doesn't have registered RAM it could cause this problem
with freezing. 
Also try to update your BIOS to the most recent version.
I have a similar system but with dual Athlon MP processors.
I watched exactly the same behavior that you described below, until I
replaced regular DDR RAM with ECC DDR RAM.
