Oh, one thing I forgot to mention:
ping -f between the Linux laptop and any other machine on the LAN shows average rtt of 0.184ms. Quite good.

full speed. Have you tried a different FTP client? or a different FTP
server on Win2K?
Can you be more specific about which client apps work full speed
with which servers and which client apps work slowly with which servers?
