Hi:
I have just ordered SuSE 8 and I'm waiting for it to arrive. My system has 7.2 Personal installed, and I use it daily to work, mainly developing accounting software for Linux. I have a lot of additional software installed, some of which I had to compile myself. Therefore, I can not afford to be without it for long. In the past, whenever I bought a new version, be it Red Hat, Mandrake or SuSE, I was always told it was best to do a fresh install instead of an upgrade, because the upgrade programs were not that smart. Has this changed with SuSE 8? Any successful experiences?
Thank you.
Alfredo, These are my thoughts only not facts, so the final decision always comes down to you. If I were you, I would probably try the upgrade as is first, realizing of course that it may not go well. With that in mind, I would do backups of those things you might need later, especially your home directory where all your settings are stored. If you have the capabilities, you might want to make a complete backup, but I doubt that would be necessary. With all the changes & additions you have made to the original install of 7.2, I would be doubtful of the success of an upgrade, but it will take only a short time to do that and determine if it worked or not. In my almost one year experience, yes June will make me a seasoned one year novice/pro, I have found that the fresh installs always give you the best results. I did do a 7.2 to 7.3 update with success, but you are spanning more versions than I did and usually those are not as simple. I too don't believe using Linux for one year makes you anywhere near the pro status either! ;o) I have only just begun to learn! :o) Patrick -- --- KMail v1.4 --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.0 --- Registered Linux User #225206 Magic Page Products -- Amiga-SuSE-PC Sales & Service URL: http://home.sprintmail.com/~tracerb
