You don't need to "worry" about it, but if you actually have PCMCIA cards that you want to use then it could be a problem. Do you get this message every time you reboot, or just one time. (You can restart the pcmcia subsystem by typing "rcpcmcia restart" as root.) If this is a consistent problem then check out both SuSE's docs and the YaST2 configuration tool... These should at least get you started. It would be helpful for me to know how much Linux experience you have--both in general and specifically with PCMCIA related configuration under Linux.

Thanks for replying. I have installed the Suse 8.0 pro on my laptop to dual boot with Windows ME. Is this something to worry about? Thanks Leo

cardmgr is the PCMCIA card manager. If you don't have a laptop or a PCMCIA reader, then you don't need to worry about it. "[556]" is probably just the PID of the process.
If you don't have, need, or want PCMCIA support, then you can uninstall the pcmcia package using:
rpm -e pcmcia
If you do need it, then check out the man page of cardmgr and cardctl (the are both part of the pcmcia subsystem):
man cardmgr man cardctl
I think the SuSE manuals talk about PCMCIA too, but I don't have any near me to check right now.
Hope that helps,
If you have other questions, or a more specific question about cardmgr, let me know.

What is "cardmgr [556]: config error, file config"? I get this in the xconsole at startup. Thanks
