I am using 7.0 professional with Samba running, the latest offering of Netatalk and an evaluation copy of ESP PrintPro version 4.2.2. I have been successful in creating access for Macintosh and Windows clients to our school district printers. The problem I am having is that I cannot access the Mita DP2800 series (Kyocera FS 7000 and 7000+) printers as a Mac client when using my Linux box as a print server. In my papd.conf file, I am using information that works for HP laserjet printers. Here is an example of a working printer for both Mac and Win workstations using a ppd created using ESP PrintPro version 4.2.2.. HSRRM13HP:\ :pr=|/usr/bin/lp -d HSRM13HP:\ :op=daemon:\ ` :pd=etc/cups/ppd/HSRM13HP.ppd: I just substitute the terminator data and ppd with the Mita DP2800 (Kyocera) information. What happens is that when I stop and start atalk, I get an error in my xconsole stating: "month, day, time" linux papd[xxxxx]: No such printer : lp "month, day, time" linux papd[xxxxx]: printcap problem: lp (I have been to linuxprinting.org and as I suspected found that Mita printers work "partially". So true. ESP ProPrint support had told me to do most of the things I had already done regarding Netatalk to the best of my knowledge so that was no help at the time.) Then when I use a networked Mac and in the chooser I am looking for a LaserWriter 8, I have a blank space in the top of the available printers listing (most likely the xconsole errors) but the printer name is displayed. When I select the freshly created Mita, The Mac tries to connect and does not ask for a PPD selection and stalls. The blank space can be selected as a printer which I find amusing. HP LaserJet printers on the other hand work as expected. I have tried using different ESP PrintPro generated ppd's from Apple to HP and set the emulation on the mita to HP5M/5Si to no avail. Does anybody from this list have some advice? The main purpose for the Mita printer is that it is in 3 Mac labs (30 machines per lab) and is toner based (toner refill and not the replacement of a image unit) so it is much more inexpensive to operate than a HP4100 or the like. The interest in linux is that printing appears to be faster then using our Windows NT4.0 print server amongst other things. Maybe it is a simple fix or a wild goose chase I just don't know.
