It's not a hardware issue.... I've got a laptop and a stationary
computer both with DVD's.
Both played dvd's flawlessly under SuSE7.2 but since I upgraded to 8.0
they both have the problems you describe.
However once I compiled my own kernel ( >2.4.19pre6 ) everything works
fine again.
I can really recommend the vanilla kernel + the patches found here
http://infolinux.de/jp/
which among other things replaces OSS with alsa09.
