I've recently installed 8.0, my first try with SuSE and I'm very pleased with it, but notice that in at least one of the security update announcements there is a '.patch.rpm' as well as normal '.rpm' and '.source.rpm' files available for download. Could some kind soul please tell me what the '.patch' rpms are for, and do I need them and if so what should I do with them?
You only need the regular rpms, e.g. imlib-1.9.10-324.i386.rpm. The patch rpms just contain the files that are different from the original package while the regular rpm contains a complete package.
How can these patch rpms be installed? They are very attractive as they are small -> more convenient to download? Is there a special rpm option that can be executed to install the patch rpms?? The patch rpms seems impossible as they change files, being delivered by or belonging to another rpm. So the patch rpm must do some tricky things with the rpm database.
