Looking for a small-scale library SW

Hi,
I'm looking for a SW which helps to keep track of user's documents and
projects.
There is about 400000 files in my home directory and often it's time
consuming to find a report which I wrote e.g. two years ago when I
don't remember the name and location of the file anymore.
Some kind of a simple database (with powerful text search) that can
keep a project annotation and location would be nice. Any suggestions?
