Ok, I've got a PIII-500, 256Mb ram and the motherboard uses the mobile
version of the BX-chipset.
I run SuSE7.2 on it with kernel 2.4.19pre6 + rmap12-patches.
I've also upgraded X to version 4.2.0.
The DVD is using dma and I can run all my DVD-movies in fullscreen on it
(15" 1024x768). DivX-movies run eaven easier on the cpu (20-40%) and
DVD-playback never uses more than 75-80%.

I run xine-0.9.8 for movie playback.

I doubt the problem is in the version of X. I rather suspect there are
limitiations in the SuSE-kernel supplied with 8.0.

Try compiling your own kernel, I believe that will do the trick!
