Hi folks - I've got three questions that relate to SuSE 7.1. 1st question has to do with getting a USB mouse to work on my laptop, a Compaq Presario 12XL430. being a laptop, and a compaq in particular, makes for interesting challenges but hopefully I'm up for it. According to the linux-usb.org USB-guide, there are several necessary steps. First the USB Human Interface Device (HID) support needs to be turned on. I have no idea how to do that but I do find input.o and mousedev.o in /lib/modules/2.4.0-4GB/kernel/drivers/input and hid.o in /lib/modules/2.4.0-4GB/kernel/drivers/usb. I didn't install those modules and wouldn't know how at the moment if told to do so. When I plug in my USB pocket mouse I don't get any kernel messages that I can identify, BUT, cat /dev/input/mice gives weird characters in bash when the mouse is moved. I've modified my XF86Config to reflect the changes indicated in the USB-guide although the word "CorePointer" results in x failing to load; removing it lets X load. So I guess the real question is what am I either doing wrong, omitting, or both? 2nd question is what is the best | only | preferred way to install any module without having to reconfigure the kernel. Still not feeling confident to configure the kernel yet! For example, how would I go about installing the input.0 or hid.o modules it not already loaded. 3rd question. I can't get .mov or .mp* files to play. When I attempt to play a .mov file, I get the player controls ( start, stop, forward, and backward) displayed across from the location window in Konqurer, but nothing else happens. When I try to play either a .mpe or .mpg file. Kaiman loads, displays the file name in the display window, then a Kaiman error message appears saying "connection to soundserver failed - make sure that artsd is really running." Whereis artsd displays its location as artsd: /opt/kde2/bin/artsd and KDE Control Center [Sound Server} shows both run soundserver with realtime priority and enable full duplex as checked. response time is set to 50ms but I've tried both 10ms and 250ms and it made no difference. What am i doing incorrectly? dave -- David C.
