Hello,
head over to http://gatos.sourceforge.net/ for hardware accelerated
drivers for ATI chipsets.
I myself use a laptop with an ATI chipset where these drivers offer
colorspaceconversion and scaling in hardware. This gives me fullscreen
playback of DVD's using Xine on a rather old laptop that dropped nearly
half of the frames with ordinary drivers.
Haven't tried any OpenGL accel-stuff with these drivers, though they
mention some hardware support for 3d. I doubt it matches that of a
Nvidia card though...
Good luck!
