Thanks, I'll look at your suggestions, I'd quite like
a grub configuration file if you could sent it to me.

Hi,
Seems like LILO is having problems finding the right kernel. Can you enclose your lilo.conf and /etc/fstab?
You can boot on the DVD to get into your system again. Try to reinstall LILO with Yast2. Then also run '/sbin/lilo -v' in the console. And then run 'mk_initrd'. Check if there are any error messages. Also check that you install LILO to the MBR, and that you tell LILO what the path to the kernel image is.
If you still got problems when booting, you can try to install Grub from the DVD. Run the command 'grub-install', which installs the Grub bootloader to your MBR. Then you must create a file /boot/grub/menu.lst that has the config for your OSes. If you need it I can send you a config example, you will set it up in 5 minutes. Grub is more stable for booting with dual-boot systems, and is more interactive at boot than LILO.

===== Hi Out of desperation I changed PIO to 2 on the dvd drive and tried again. Eureka 11!! It worked and installed with no problems. At last.
I couldn't get a very satisfactory resolution in X yet but I'm sure I can fix that in time.
One other issue is that my usual test procedure with a new version/disto is to install into a separate partition from my main system, without LILO, reboot from the cd/dvd and complete the instal. I then add the new test version ti LILO as installed in the mbr from my main system. When I tried this with 8.0 it fails to boot from LILO, with a kernel panic. Am I doing something wrong ?
Hi again,
Been holidaying in the nice northern pre-summer weather. Back now with a lot of patience built up.
I managed to install 8.0 with my CD's(DVD would not boot) on my new PC. Some packages was not installed for some reason, but I installed them afterwards and now it seems to work ok.
I have the same experience as you with 7.1 and 7.3, both installed nicely on both my new and old computer, while 8.0 needed more persuasion to get working. To me that says that I have not a hardware

The error messages you report seems to be that the installation has problems talking with your CD-rom, which I suppose is on hdc? The solution for my new PC was to set the PIO to 0 in the BIOS for the CD-RW. I see you have done the same with no result, have you tried with PIO 1 or 2?
