Hi, I'm wondering - must I reboot for my Suse 8.0 to realize that there's a PCMCIA card just been plugged in?

Now way!
PCMCIA is a hotplug device. It can be pulled/swapped/installed/whatever and the system should just go, "...oh, there you are! :)"
Well. It don't. However, in Yast2 > Hardware >Hardware Info it has the line: PCMCIA: YES But when I ask Yast 2 to detect modems it says none found. I don't see an option in that Modem Configuration menu for PCMCIA modem. The card IS supported by Suse - at least, it worked perfectly fine under 7.2. It's a US robotics XJ1288 . Can anyone help?
You should make adjustments to the type of system (externel or kernel) module is loaded, and some other piddly settings, then you should be ready to rock.
I guess those piddly settings are what I'm looking for.
Good luck, hope this helps!
It gives me hope at least!! Nick
