I would like to change my filesystems from ext2 to ext3. I think I know how to do this, but want to be sure before I really mess things up. Also, I have a question about the dump program. Here is what I *think* I need to do: 1. Change /etc/fstab to specify ext3 insterad of ext2. 2. Use tune2fs to add a journal. I think I can do this while the file system is mounted: tune2fs /dev/sda1 -j 3. Run mkinitrd. 4. Rebot to check it out. Now for the question about the dump program. According to /usr/share/doc/packages/e2fsprogs/RELEASE-NOTES: there may be issues with this [dump] working well since ext3 is much less agressive about syncing blocks to the filesystem, since they're safe on the journal. The above note is dated July 13, 2000. Is this still something to worry about? If so, what can I do about it. Perhaps there is something I can do just before using the dump command, like turning off journaling and/or sync'ing. -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net
