I DO get the "Concatenating splash picture size 1280x1024 to initrd... done." message at the end of the mk_initrd run. However, there is no mention of splash anything in the boot.msg file. The relevant msgs in my boot.msg file are like those above with the exception that I'm using 24-bit 0:8:8:8 directcolor vs. the 16-bit 0:5:6:5 directcolor above and there is no "<6>Looking for splash picture..." line.
hm. Which kernel source are you using? The vanilla sources from kernel.org don't contain the splash code suse uses.
Oops! Forgot to specify. I'm using a kernel built from Hubert Mantel's kernel-source-2.4.18.SuSE-73.i386.rpm. Config is mostly stock (i.e., using the .config file in the RPM file). The only (IMHO) significant addition is that I've enabled devfs support. also changed are: 1. set processor family to Pentium-III 2. enabled PCI device name database 3. set RTC to GMT 4. enabled verbose SCSI error reporting 5. set Horiz/Vert screen res to 1280/1024 I can't imagine that any of these should have any effect. I tend to be very conservative with my kernel config changes when trying out new kernels, staying very close to the original config until I verify that the kernel runs ok. Also, I'm using exclusively ext3 for all my filesystems, and am using the updated version of mk_initrd (which adds support for ext3 root filesystem) from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/snwint/initrd/mk_initrd Thanks!
