Hi Jerry, What I do on my machines is slightly insane, but it works for me. I create a small root partition (about 200 MB), and then dedicate everything else to an LVM partition. I create my usr, opt, var, and home directories in the LVM using ReiserFS, and I size them on the small side. You can't create a swap partition in LVM during SuSE install, but it's easy to create one manually later. Now I don't have to peer into my crystal ball and predict how much space I'll need for opt - I give it just enough for now and grow it on the fly as needed. Thanks. I'll try it. I just installed 8.0 on my laptop. I had stolen some of the swap partition for my home directory. Not all went well. There were about 6 errors, but I should be able to correct those either online or from CD (I installed from DVD).

Hi Jerry,
ReiserFS is the real winner here. You don't have to unmount the partition to expand it. (You must unmount to shrink, however.)
Let's assume you left space on the disk after your home partition, /dev/hda10, and you want to grow it by 1 GB:
/sbin/resize_reiserfs -s +1G /dev/hda10
You also use /sbin/resize_reiserfs for shrinking an unmounted partition:
/sbin/resize_reiserfs -s -500M /dev/hda10
Ext3 uses the same trick, but the partition must be unmounted. With Ext3 (and Ext2) the command is /sbin/resize_e2fs .
Have fun!

What is the best way to resize either an ext3 or reiser file system if possible.
