hehe...I had the same issues, you must be coming from v6.x aye?
after installing your packages you must use the runlevel editor to auto
start/stop services. See the runlevel editor section in the included manual
of the distro for details.

Have just installed SuSE 8.0 here.
How can I set SENDMAIL_SMARTHOST, SMB_START ??.
I also have problem with sending e-mails from Kmail. I normally use SMTP
and lcalhost port 25, but
the Kmail with SuSE 8.0 seems to will use SENDMAIL as default. The mails
I want to send are placed in
/var/mail after they seem to have been sent, but they haven't.
From Netscape 6.0 where I write this the e-mail is sent ok.
