I have that problem in 7.3 with KDE3. But for me it takes about 24hours for the problem to happen. I have reported my problem to bugs.kde.org.
You don't have to restart KDE to get the panel back. Just start kicker.

Thanks for that. I'll try restarting kicker. But once the problem has begun, the desktop is effectively near-frozen for some time, so it could take me 10-15 minutes to get a prompt to start kicker from. I'd need a bit better solution before I could start to use 8.0 as a desktop machine. From my point of view, that leaves the default install fairly badly crippled, but I suppose time will tell whether it's just a hardware peculiarity affecting only me, or whether other people get the same thing.
