there is a ping in win98 (C:\windows\ping.exe) and it can be run from a
dos-box with the target host's ip address. For example:
ping 192.168.1.101
I am not conversant with the LinkSys router, does it have a dhcp server? Do
the hosts (SuSE and win98) fetch their ip address from a dhcp server?

dos-box with the target host's ip address. For example:
ping 192.168.1.101
