How slow is a snail? I don't have an answer to the question, only a bit of trivia for the record. Though I have a bit more RAM (196 MB), my AMD is an old 333 MHz K6 running on a "fast" 33 MHz bus. Spurred by the question, I just checked how long it takes for S.O.-5.2 to go up: 28 sec.
Here's a worse metric:
I can open Staroffice, then while it's loading, load up MS Word via Crossover Office. MS Office is up and editing a blank document while StarOffice is still displaying a splash screen.
You know it's slow when...
I'd like to point out that "heavy" programs such as SO5.2 open considerably faster when using a light-weight window manager such as Blackbox or XFCE instead of KDE2 (and having no other programs running). Even on my P166 with 64 MB RAM I find it quite acceptable. SH
