I believe someone here also posted instructions for TCP/IP. I would highly recommend using a router, because if you make the following changes and then try to use dial-up, you won't be able to establish a connection. You'll have to create 2 configurations on your Mac: one TCP/IP configuration for your private network (i.e. the Mac and the linux pc) and another for your dial-up internet connection.
Another alternative is maybe you could use your Linux pc to do dial-up and then somehow "share" its connection with your Mac. (anyone know if this is possible?)
Anyway, to configure TCP/IP so that your Mac can see your Linux PC:
On your Mac: Apple Menu | Control Panels | TCP/IP With the TCP/IP Control panel open, select File | Configurations Whatever configuration file is highlighted, select "Duplicate..." and give it a new name (something like "Home Network") Click "OK" and then click "Make Active" Now change the following settings: Connect via: Ethernet Configure: Manually IP Address: 192.168.1.10 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Router Address: <blank> Close the window and when it asks if you want to save settings, click YES. RESTART YOUR MAC. (Note: if you use dial-up on your Mac, you will have to go back into the TCP/IP control panel and choose your original configuration, and then click the "Make Active" button. Do this BEFORE trying to use dial-up.) ... using a router or sharing your Linux PC's internet connection would eliminate the need to switch configurations each time.
On your Linux PC: K menu | Preferences | YaST menu | YaST2 Modules | Network Basic | Network Card Configuration Highlight the Ethernet device (0, 1, etc) and click "Edit" Choose "Static Address Setup" IP Address: 192.168.1.12 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Click on "Next" Click "Finish" and let the network services restart
Now your Mac should be able to see the Linux PC under the Chooser. If not, then you have some additional configurations to make to Netatalk.
