Hi all, As I was working on getting my negative & slide part working on my Epson Perfection 1650 Photo scanner last evening, I ran across some things I thought others using scanners & Epson in particular. There is a new Sane backend available in SuSE rpm format I found. Version 1.0.6 is available and instructions for using it on both Suse 7.2 & 7.3 with Gimp. http://www.freecolormanagement.com/sane/index.html Of course, always visit this site first for information on Sane supported scanners and backend links. This site has invaluable information on just about every scanner available, plus USB support links in getting those working. http://www.buzzard.org.uk/jonathan/scanners-usb.html The last thing is one of the best! As I was getting the new Sane backend, I found another site directly associated with Epson. As it turns out for those that complain about not having the same programs for scanning use that those Windows users have, this site cures that problem. I kinda wish this software was included on the CDs that come with the scanners or in the SuSE package! It is GPL and some binaries are available. There is also a printing program for Epson printers only, to do Photo output directly from the scanning program! Us HP, Canon & Lexmark owners are out of luck right now! :o( The main program is called Image Scan or IScan and works great with several of the Epson scanners, especially with the Photo types. Gotta love Linux and the companies that help support it. http://www.epkowa.co.jp/english/linux_e/ I hope some others find these programs & information as helpful as I did.
