Hello again, I have finally managed to install SuSE 7.3 Pro on my Win 2k box, with some help on monitor configuration, but there were a number of problems... 1) gcc - unpacking of archive failed: Bad Magic (does that make this ;-) Linux Voodoo?). 2) howtoenh - .754978 error. 3) /var/adm/mount/suse/doc1/sdb_en.rpm not found. 4) kdegames 545114 error 5) tcpd unpacking of archive failed:cpio - bad magic 6) icons-xpm 32.894321 error. Man, I have never seen so many errors in my life on a Linux install! I finally got SuSE up and running by doing a standard KDE Office install, but without Star Office. I added "idanish" for Danish spell check, as well as the Opera web browser, Quanta and KOffice. The result is the relatively few errors as you see above. On earlier attempts, it was a lot worse. Anyway, here are my problems: 1) How serious are the above errors, what can I do about them and are they the reason why the KDE Control Center crashes? 2) My ethernet cards are not listed correctly/do not have correct drivers or drivers are unavailable in SuSE. This prevents me from gaining access to my LAN or to the Internet via my router and cable modem. My 2 ethernet cards are listed in Win 2000 as: VIA PCI 10/100Mb Fast Ethernet Adapter PNIC2 Based Fast Ethernet Adapter (ACPI) I know that the second card is an Asante FriendlyNet card and in Mandrake Linux is provided with a Tulip driver that works. However, this is not being used at this time. It is the other card that I need to get configured properly to access the Internet. I have looked at the manuals that came with SuSE 7.3 Pro, but can't for the life of me figure out how to reconfigure the ethernet cards' drivers. Any ideas how to change this in SuSE? I do have to say that there are two things that really impressed me about the SuSE installation. The first is the ease with which a ReiserFS partition can be formatted in. I tried this in Mandrake 8 and never succeeded due to the complexity and me being a newbie ;-) THe other thing that impressed me was the automagical mounting of my Win 2000 partition on the desktop. I have never seen this in either Mandrake or Red Hat! -- Cheers, Brian mailto:durant@cbn.net.id
