I do not know if this is applicable for your application, but you might think about using png. If I recall correctly it has all the features of a gif (plus a few) and none of the patent limitations, also I think the file size is equal and it is lossless. gimp (at least the version I have) does not offer gif as an output format when I select save formats. There is a long-standing issue with gif format files. Because Unisys holds a software patent on the method for producing gif files, some programs will not save files in that format to avoid patent infringement claims.
The 'display' program (part of ImageMagick) will read jpg and save in gif format.
