The kernel patch 2.4.17

So, I downloaded the kernel patch 2.4.17 and install it (from super user ofcorse) with
bzip2 -dc /usr/src/patch-2.4.17.bz2 | patch -p1
it printed something and then it finished.

So my question is wath relly happend because iI don't see any rezults. could someoane tell me (I'm just curios).
