I don't think it's quite that bad. The scanner is a complete piece of
hardware, and AFAIK would work from Linux if an appropriate USB driver was
written. That would be a relatively trivial job given the right information,
which, it appears, Canon is not willing to supply.
Of course, this is a pedantic argument. It's not going to get you scanning
with this device any sooner... :-(
