Time delay on audiocd:/

Can anyone tell me what their experience with timing on the audiocd function
in Konqueror is? I was using this on a 7.3 install on a K6-2/400, and it
took about 3 minutes to produce the CD listing, and then another 2-3 minutes
to start a rip if you selected a track for ripping. Subsequent rips were
commenced almost immediately, provided you did them fairly soon (5 minutes?)
after the first one.
I thought this might be due to the slow processor in the PC, but I've just
put 7.3 on a PC with an Athlon, and the same thing happens, which makes it
pretty unpleasant to use. I do remember installing 7.3 for a friend on a
Pentium 4 machine about 3 months ago, and I seem to remember that audiocd
worked almost instantaneously on that, but that may just be my mind playing
tricks.
Would it be better just to use Lame directly?
