running SuSE 7.0 and a friend of mine just gave me a cd-rw.
I need friends like that :-)
I know how to physically install the unit in the chassis, plug in the ribbon cable, and the power supply.I don't know how to tell SuSE Linux that it is a cd-rw.
I think, if you re-boot (there *must* be a more-elegant way to do it than this...), then your burner should be "discovered", and show up in the boot-messages. That should confirm that you've got it all installed correctly. At this point, you can't actually use the drive for anything, but at least it won't catch fire :-) I'm afraid I can't really help you with instructing your SuSE system to recognize the added hardware (my system was complete when I installed). You might try: - yast -> System Administration -> Integrate Hardware into System -searching SuSE's knowledgebase: http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/key_form.html -searching the Web Your first step should be to get the cd-rw recognized, and operating as a reader. Before you can burn, however, there are a few more steps. To burn, your cd-rw must have SCSI-emulation running. There's a really good set of steps; I can only stress following each step exactly, accurately and completely: http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/tbraza_ide_brenner.html HTH, -Gord
