Actually the correct syntax is:
(setq default-major-mode 'Fundamental-mode)
Is this new in Emacs 21, or is this XEmacs? In Emacs 20.7, you have to say: (setq default-major-mode 'fundamental-mode)
You can also change it via customs. It is under Development=>Internal. Alternatively, you can just turn off auto-fill.
In fact, fundamental-mode is the default value of default-major-mode (at least in Emacs 20.7), so maybe the OP has it set otherwise in his .emacs? This would be the case if he's using SuSE's Emacs settings, since the SuSE .gnu-emacs contains (setq default-major-mode 'text-mode). --Steve Berman
