If I remember correctly, mine WAS 'preset' to reiser when I installed 
7.3.  I changed it to ext3 for / during the install, and it worked 
flawlessly.  I have installed the 2.4.16 kernel, and it is a module. 
You need to add "jbd" and "ext3" to the INITRD_MODULES line in 
rc.config, and run mk_initrd (as root) and lilo.  There are a couple of 
other things I remember reading about when changing it after the fact, 
but I'm sure one of the more knowledgeable ones will fill in the gaps. 
;-)  (like fstab changes, and tunefs? or something like that to make the 
journal file).  HTH.
