Probably your SMARTHOST doesn't want you to relay mail through his/her server. Are you just trying to send mail? or setting up a mail server? If the former, just use a program like mutt, pine, Evolution or kmail to connect to your ISP's mail server and send your mail If the latter, you need to have a valid host name and MX record. Suddenly I am getting all my email returned with the following error:
(reason: 550 5.7.1
... Relaying denied) This just started happening after I had been away for 4 days without trying to send any email -- when I got back everything I sent got that error.
I can "fix" the problem by removing the SENDMAIL_SMARTHOST from my sendmail.rc.config, but this is not satisfactory since some people's email systems won't accept email sent from me unless I use a SMARTHOST (I think this is because I don't have a "real" hostname and IP address, causing my mail to get killed by some spam filters).
I don't remember changing anything to cause this "Relaying denied" to start happening, but perhaps I messed something up before I left.
Anyone have a clue for me?
