The other way you allude to below it:
Yast->system administration->Login configuration and select ASCII rather than graphical.
This will accomplish exactly what is needed here as well.

HI I was wondering how do i disable the KDM login screen i get everytime i bring up the Box as i would rather it just to come up to the login console prompt and then if i want to go into kde or whatever i can type startx etc but i just need to have it come up into the console login thanks for any info!
Quick and dirty way: edit /etc/inittab, the 5 in the line id:5:initdefault: becomes a 3
Slower, possibly safer way: Yast->system administration->change configuration file ->DISPLAY_MANAGER set it to "console"
There is also another setting in Yast somewhere about login, which can be "graphical" or "ASCII", but I'm not sure that it covers what you are concerned with.
Once you get it booting into console mode and staying there, be sure to edit your .xinitrc file to bring up the appropriate environment/windowmanager
Cheers.
