I want to upgrade a server that is working with 7.1 to 7.3... can I do that without lossing my configuration and personal files (mail in /var/spool/mail, home directories, web files in my apache dir, my dansguardian files)...?
Yesterday, I upgraded my server from 7.2 to 7.3. There were no problems during the upgrade and configuration files were preserved. I expect the upgrade from 7.1 to 7.3 won't be that smooth since there were some changes to follow the FHS, ... (see the SuSE Linux System and Reference Manual). I suggest you make a full backup, try the upgrade and if it doesn't work well then you make a new installation. I prefer new installations on my home computer. Upgrades are much faster on servers with many services configured. One of my upgrades in the past didn't go well so I don't say it's always the preferred way but it may be worth trying.
Or I have to copy all the files, install loosing everything on the disk, and then copy my files back?
If the upgrade succeeds then most of the configuration files will be preserved. But be ready for a new installation too. -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se
